How to EnrollAbout the SAT Subject Tests

SAT Subject Tests (formerly SAT II: Subject Tests) are designed to measure a student’s knowledge and skills in particular subject areas as well as their ability to apply that knowledge. Most competitive colleges require applicants to send them scores from 2 or 3 SAT Subject Tests, which are used for both admissions and placement purposes.

All Subject Tests are one-hour, multiple-choice tests, whose format varies depending on the individual subject.

Why are SAT Subject tests important?

SAT Subject Tests provide colleges with more than just a standardized measure of a student’s previous academic achievement. Whether you are applying to an Ivy League school, a private college, or a state school, high scores on individual Subject Tests can help offset a lower-than-desired GPA or SAT score, and give you that little bit extra to push your application into the “accepted” file. SAT Subject Tests also allow admissions committees to compare what an A in Biology at school 1 means in comparison with an A in Biology at school 2—a very significant consideration for many admissions officers.

When should I take SAT Subject Tests?

Most students take Subject Tests toward the end of their junior year or at the beginning of their senior year. At Med School Tutors, we recommend that students begin even earlier, thereby reducing the excessive strain associated with junior and senior years of high school as well as with college applications. The guiding principle supporting this recommendation is “divide and conquer”: students perform best when confronted with one challenge at a time. In short: an earlier start means less stress and higher scores.

When can I take these exams?

The Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Math (Level 1 and Level 2) SAT Subject Tests are administered six Saturdays a year (or Sundays for those who qualify because of religious reasons) in October, November, December, January, May, and June.

Our SAT Subject Test Specialties:

Our Approach to SAT Subject Test Tutoring

You are at the center of our SAT Subject Test preparation program, which is why we begin with an in-home consultation. This conversation allows us to familiarize ourselves with you, your difficulties, learning habits, and short- and long-term goals. During or soon after our meeting, you also receive a real diagnostic test, the results of which provide us an invaluable snapshot of your personal strengths, weaknesses, goals, and expectations prior to pairing you with your instructor.

Getting to know your specific testing strengths and weaknesses enables us to select the right tutor for your needs. In doing so, we guarantee that your tutor will be uniquely able to craft explanations and exercises that work for you—immediately making your test preparation more effective and more efficient.

Under the expert tutelage of your Med School Tutors instructor, you will construct an efficient, comprehensive, and customized learning plan. Your plan will include a disciplined review of necessary subject material, a focus on the strategies and techniques that work for you, and special tips for each question type. For example, since all SAT Subject Test questions are worth an equal amount, our students learn to answer all the easier questions first before returning to the harder ones. With proven test-taking tools and methods like this, students learn the material and the art of taking the SAT Subject Test, yielding increased confidence and higher scores.

As your instruction progresses, three essential activities—frequent sessions, targeted homework assignments, and regular practice tests—will help us ensure that you are truly understanding and retaining the information you study. Throughout our work, we will continuously review the material and refine your test-taking skills, so that you are confident and ready to excel on test day.
