About the Physics SAT Subject Test
The Physics SAT Subject Test is a one-hour exam consisting of 75 multiple-choice questions. It is designed to measure a student’s ability to understand and apply the major concepts of physics to solve problems.
- Students should have taken at least one year of high school physics with a laboratory component. Additionally, students must be comfortable with solving algebra and trigonometry problems.
- Students are not allowed to use a calculator on the exam.
- Scoring is based on a 200 to 800 point scale. The raw score is calculated by adding one point for every correct answer and subtracting ¼ point for every incorrect answer. For each unanswered question, zero points can be earned. ETS converts one’s raw score to a scaled score using a curve tailored to each particular test.
- The Physics SAT Subject Test is administered six Saturdays (or Sundays for those who qualify because of religious reasons) a year in October, November, December, January, May, and June.

Format of the Physics Test
The Physics SAT Subject Test is divided into two parts:
Part A: Classification Questions (12 – 13 Questions)
The student is provided with five possible answers followed by a string of questions to which these answer apply. Since this format permits several questions about the same topic, classification questions require a fuller understanding of each subject.
Part B: Five-Choice Completion Questions (62 – 63 Questions)
Standard multiple-choice questions ask students to select the best possible answer to a single question.
Skills Tested
Recall (20 – 33%)
Single-Concept Problem (40 – 53%)
Multiple-Concept Problem (20 – 33%)
Laboratory Skills (tested throughout the exam)
