About the NCLEX
The NCLEX-RN® (the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses) is a certification exam measuring the competencies needed to perform safely and effectively as a licensed, registered nurse. Every state requires passage of the NCLEX-RN® exam in order to obtain a license to practice as a registered nurse.
Quick NCLEX Facts
- Whereas nursing school exams are knowledge-based, the NCLEX exam is an application-based test, challenging examinees to make critically thought-out nursing judgments.
- The NCLEX-RN® exam is divided into four major categories and eight subcategories. All of the questions on the exam require the examinee to integrate relevant nursing content derived from medical, surgical, pediatric, psychiatric, and obstetric material.
- While the questions on the NCLEX-RN® exam are primarily multiple-choice (with four possible answer choices), there are also multiple-response, fill-in-the-blank, hot spots, chart/exhibit, and drag-and-drop questions.
- The exam is a computer adaptive test (CAT), a testing format that interactively designs each question based on the accuracy of the examinee’s responses to the previous question(s).
The NCLEX-RN® is graded on a pass/fail scale. A determination will be made at the conclusion of the exam about whether you have passed or failed, and you will be officially notified by your individual state board of nursing approximately 2 – 4 weeks after your test date.
If you fail, you are permitted to retest 45 days after the initial administration.
Passing the NCLEX-RN® Exam has Become More Difficult
In response to modifications of U.S. standards for entry-level RNs, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) recently raised the passing score for the NCLEX-RN® examination. The higher standard took effect April 1st, 2007.
This change has had little to no affect on our students. Med School Tutors continues to watch even our most nervous students achieve extraordinary NCLEX results. Whether you are a first-time taker, or are attempting to make up for an early false start, there is a Med School Tutors instructor perfectly suited to help you excel.
