What are the benefits of private tutoring?

Sometimes classroom learning just isn’t individualized enough to meet every student’s needs. Classes can grow too large; students may feel uncomfortable asking questions; teachers may have to teach above or below students’ abilities. One-on-one tutoring eliminates these concerns by providing each tutee with exceptional teachers who work directly with him or her to acquire the tools needed to excel academically.

What are the typical results of your tutoring programs?

.Dramatic improvement, evident success, personal satisfaction.

Our students report an average SAT score increase of 300 points, and most of our MCAT students have raised their scores by 5 points or more.

Our academic subject tutoring has returned similar results: our students frequently earn A’s and superior AP test scores in the subjects for which they are tutored, including calculus, biology, chemistry, physics, and many more. Notably, nearly all of our students have achieved the objectives established with our instructors at the beginning of their Med School Tutors program.

Why has Med School Tutors been so successful at helping so many different kinds of students succeed?

We make an unusual effort to recruit the brightest and most creative tutors in the New York Metropolitan Area. We then match each of our students with the tutor or tutors whose temperament and teaching style best suit his or her individual needs and learning style.

Once paired with the appropriate tutor, students delve into a comprehensive curriculum that is constantly adapted to his or her changing circumstances. As such, each lesson develops according to the student’s strengths and weaknesses, as we help him or her to tackle and overcome areas of personal weakness and use his or her strengths to the greatest possible advantage.

What is your approach to tutoring?

The Med School Tutors approach to tutoring is first and foremost an individualized one. Every student learns differently, every student has different strengths and weaknesses, every student has different needs and goals.

That’s why tutoring with Med School Tutors begins with a thorough in-person or phone consultation, affording us the indispensable opportunity to familiarize ourselves with new students, their temperaments, and learning styles, so that we can match them with just the right tutor—someone who can connect with, inspire, and motivate them to excel.

What does a typical Med School Tutors program look like?

There is no typical Med School Tutors curriculum, because all of our programs vary according to the subject and student. We pride ourselves on having highly customized programs that optimize success for each particular subject and test, and for each individual student.

Nevertheless, all of our tutoring curricula share some fundamental structural characteristics:

Initial assessment: Whether a student seeks assistance in an academic subject, a standardized test, or with admissions counseling, we always start with an in-person consultation so that we can get to know you as a student and match you with the tutor or adviser best suited to help you achieve your goals. Additionally, students preparing for standardized exams begin their instruction with a real diagnostic test, the results of which provide a greater understanding of where he or she stands in relation to his or her goals.

Establish achievable objectives: Having completed the initial assessment, our tutors will work with students and parents to establish clear objectives, timelines, and expectations for the future.

Design a long-term learning strategy: Learning requires a disciplined plan. After taking a serious look at the student’s starting position, our tutors will help students design their own learning strategy, including choosing areas requiring the most time and emphasis as well as setting up a long-term tentative schedule for covering the material, which will of course be adapted (where necessary) to the student’s coursework.

Conceptual mastery: The primary purpose of our tutoring programs is to help students master the concepts and information necessary for excelling on a given test or in a given subject. Utilizing their academic expertise and extensive teaching experience, our tutors walk students, step-by-step, through all of the required materials, ensuring as they move forward that the student fully grasps—and can apply—what is being taught.

Practice makes perfect: Yes, the old adage is true—nothing can guarantee success and learning as much as constant, rigorous practice. Therefore, our tutors supply myriad exercises and practice tests for students to complete both under the tutor’s supervision and on their own.

Carefully track progress: Our tutors regularly review students’ progress with the student and with their parents (when desired) to ensure that all parties in the process know how well the student is performing. These reassessments also permit the tutor to work with the student (and parents, if appropriate) to shift priorities, if necessary, and to make constructive amendments to the student’s overall learning strategy.

When should I, or my child, start receiving instruction from Med School Tutors?

The simple answer is as early as possible. Successful, effective learning is achieved steadily, over time—not by cramming at the last minute. As a result, the earlier you begin receiving our help the more prepared and confident you will be when your exams or other deadlines near.

For students preparing for any of the primary admissions exams—SAT, GRE, MCAT, LSAT, GMAT, DAT, etc.—we ordinarily recommend that they begin their tutoring at least one year in advance. For AP exams and SAT Subject Tests, we suggest a minimum of six months of diligent tutoring prior to the test.

The earlier you get started, the less time you will have to spend cramming, the more work you can do on your own, and, thus, the more effective and cost-efficient your tutoring will be. Being prepared early means that you won’t have to make up for lost time, and that you won’t be in danger of having to repeat important lessons or essential entrance exams.

Where does tutoring take place?

In your home or at another location of your choosing. We are committed to making your tutoring experience as convenient and comfortable as possible.

How long is a typical tutoring session?

The average session lasts about 2 hours. In order to ensure enough time for effective learning, we do require that each educational session last a minimum of 1.5 hours. Other than this, the length of a tutoring session is almost entirely at the discretion of the student and tutor. We make ourselves available for any length of time necessary. Towards the end of the semester or at the approach of an important exam, if any of our tutors are fully booked, we offer an on-call service in which we provide you with an equally skilled tutor to take your tutor’s place, any time, day or night.

Do you provide editing services for college essays and term papers?

Yes. While we aim first and foremost to help students improve their personal writing ability, we also recognize the significance of getting good grades and writing effective college essays. Therefore, we offer extensive editing services from trained and experienced editors that will help you make your work stand out. We ask that editing services be incorporated into students’ tutoring sessions, so that they may also learn from the editing process.
